School Loans and Good Credit

In our capitalist culture, we are encouraged to buy and acquire things through a variety of sources: television commercials, peer pressure, etc. Sometimes, when one can’t afford these nice things, they turn to the dangerous option of credit.

As a student, it can be exciting to be out on one's own and able to make purchases without needing to check with one's parent(s) first. But, before you decide to go for that new plasma TV or fancy laptop computer, think about the effect this might have on your credit. There are plenty of credit card companies that prey on unsuspecting students. After all, they want you to not pay them back and that way they make money on interest. So, obviously, don't buy things and then not pay your credit card bills, since this leads to bad credit. You probably already knew that.

So how do you get good credit? Well, for starters it is actually good to get a credit card. Get a couple if you can, but try to get ones without membership fees. Also, don't just let them sit in your wallet. Charge various purchases to them and spread it around, then make your monthly payments on time. This will establish you reliable credit which will prove invaluable down the road when you want to rent a house or apartment, apply for a car loan, or even buy a house.

The important thing to note about credit is to start early and establish a good record and in doing so, you will find it's not tough at all to have good credit as a student!
